It is one of the famous traditional cakes in Wuzhen. It looks like chess, and is handmade of selected materials. It suits both the young and the old, with different flavors of sesame, shallot, peanuts, coarse grain, and chrysanthemum, combining both sweet and salty, presenting a unique flavor.

Gusai cookies have been produced in Wuzhen since at least hundreds of years ago. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, in the "Native products" in volume 20 of "Wuqing Town Records", which was written by Dong Shining, who was from Wuzhen, and Lu Xuepu, gusai cookies were recorded: "use very fine wheat flour and sugar and sesame to make round cakes, with flavors of pretzels and white sugar. It is sweet and delicious, and it is famous in and beyond this region."
