The Silkworm Holy Bridge is located in the Yidasi Silkworm Workshop area, crossing a tributary of the Xishi River in a north-south direction. It is connected to the Silkworm Workshop area to the north and the affiliated area of the Silkworm Workshop in Nantong. This bridge has a total length of 13.6 meters, a clear span of 4.6 meters, and a deck width of 7.7 meters. The biggest feature of this bridge is the construction of a wooden hip-and-gable roof structure on the bridge. The hip-and-gable roof is the roof format of ancient buildings in China, and other formats include the Dianding roof, yingshan roof, and Zanjian roof.
Legend has it that a long time ago, when there were no silks or silkworms in the world, there was a White Horse General who, due to being outnumbered, retreated to Jiangnan. Because of days of hunger, the soldiers were no longer able to fight. The general had to kill the white horse to satisfy the soldiers' hunger, so that they could recover their strength and fight again. The general brouht his horse skin and wanted to bury it after the war. However, due to the disparity in strength between them and the enemy, only the general, who was covered in bruises, was left alone. The general thought that rather than being captured by the enemy, it would be better to end it on his own, so he wrapped his horse skin around his body and committed suicide.
Later, the enemy discovered a large package wrapped in white horse skin on the ground in Wuzhen. Upon opening it, thousands of moths soared into the air. These moths laid eggs and reproduced on the mulberry trees in this area. People knew that these were worms transformed by a general and a white horse. Later, Luogu domesticated the worms into silkworms, and from then on, they spewed out endless silk and satin for humans.
In order to commemorate the White Horse General, people worshipped him as the "Silkworm God" and built this bridge as a memorial. Because the sounds of "God (神Shen)" and Holy "(圣Sheng)" are similar, it is called the Silkworm Holy Bridge. Every year during the silkworm breeding season, local silkworm farmers come here to worship and pray for a good harvest from General White Horse.
