In the early years of the Guangxu reign (1875), Wuzhen businessman Shen Yongchang established Yida Silkworm Workshop in Wuzhen. At the beginning of the establishment, the main business was to establish a silk shop, with the main business of acquiring farmers' manually reeled silk under the shop name "Yida".
After several ups and downs in the market, Yida Silkworm Workshop gradually expanded its production and business scale, set up a silk mill and produced brocade. Its unique handmade brocade is known as "Wu brocade" and is well-known both domestically and internationally, just like the famous Sichuan "Shu brocade". The current Yida Silkworm Workshop is located in West Gate Wuzhen. Based on the original Yida Silkworm Workshop, salvage repairs have been carried out, restoring all functions of the Yida Silkworm Workshop.
The layout of the workshop follows the traditional layout model of Wuzhen handmade workshops, and storefronts are facing the street, operating Wu brocade, silk quilts, silk segments, and various other silk fabrics; Behind the storefront is a workshop with built-in textile machinery, a cooking stove for cocoons, and wooden machines for silk reeling. Nowadays, the professional craftsmen are engaged in the production of silk products in workshops.
