In the early years during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1875), Shen Yongchang, a Wuzhen businessman, founded Yida Silk Workshop in Wuzhen. At the beginning of its establishment, the workshop was named “Yida” and mainly acquired the hand-made silk from farmers.
Yida Silk Workshop has gradually expanded its production and business scale, and opened silk shops to produce brocade. Its characteristic handmade brocade is called "Wujin", which is as famous as “Shujin” in Sichuan. Nowadays, Yida Silk Shop is located on the original site of old Yida Silk Workshop with complete functions.
The layout of the workshop follows the traditional layout pattern of Wuzhen manual workshops. The storefront faces the street, offering Wujin, silk quilt, silk fabrics, and other silk products. Behind the storefront is a workshop equipped with textile machinery, pots and stoves for cocoon cooking, water tanks for silk reeling, and professional craftsmen making silk products.
