Wu brocade originates from the folk weaving industry in Wuzhen and has a history of over a thousand years to this day. The weaving process of Wu brocade is extremely complex and delicate. The weaving master selects high-quality natural silk as the basic raw material, and then weaves the solid gold-inlaid "Wu brocade" with pure gold thread, which has bright color and strong three-dimensional sense, elegant surface and extraordinary elegance.
The unique folk craft of "Wu brocade" is operated jointly by two masters by use of a large flower weaving machine with over a thousand components. The master above is called "Jacquard", and the one below is called "Weaver". Owing to the loud noise during weaving, the two can only communicate signals with each other by stepping on bamboo poles. When weaving jacquard threads, they must be fully focused and cooperate with each other without any distractions. Generally, in Wuzhen, couples are partners, as the saying goes, "Couples weave brocade, knowing oneself and the other.” The Wu brocade weaving process absorbs the original Chinese brocade weaving process and incorporates the local jacquard silk weaving handicraft of Wuzhen, which is irreplaceable by modern machines. Because of its pure handmade weaving, the weaving speed is extremely slow, with only 5-6 centimeters woven in a day, which can truly be described as "An inch of brocade is worth an inch of gold". Nowadays, the "Yida Silkworm Workshop" preserved in West Gate still follows a series of traditional processes such as cocoon selection, cocoon cooking, silk reeling, cotton bag stripping, and brocade weaving. Various exquisite handmade Wu brocades are top-notch gifts for family and friends.
