His courtesy name was Shunfu, and pen name was Lumen, and he was a scholar in the seventeenth year of Jiajing in Ming Dynasty. He was the father of the “Eight Great Men of Letters of the Tang and Song Dynasties”, a famous writer and collector, and his literary creation and theory had an important influence in the history of ancient Chinese literature. He had successively been the posts of County Magistrate of Qingyang, County Magistrate of Dantu, Director of the Ministry of Rites, Director of the Department of Official Affairs, Vice-Minister of Guangping in Fujian Province, etc. It was not his official position that made Mao Kun memorized by future generations, but his status as the chief General of the "Tang-Song School" of the Ming Dynasty literature school and 164 volumes of Copies of Works of Eight Great Men of Letters of the Tang and Song Dynasties written by him. This book selected articles from Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Ouyang Xiu, Su Xun, Su Shi, Su Zhe, Wang Anshi and Zeng Gong. It further affirmed and advocated Tang and Song's articles, which made significant influence.
Copies of Works of Eight Great Men of Letters of the Tang and Song Dynasties was famous at that time, but few people knew about Mao Kun, nor the connection between Mao Kun and Wuzhen. Mao Kun's biography was found in Wuqing Records, which was compiled by Lu Xuepu in the Republic of China. Mao Kun was from Huzhou. Huzhou was called Gui'an, and Wuzhen belonged to Gui’an at that time. Mao Kun once wrote an article the Main Office and the Branch Office, describing the process of establishing the branch office in Wuzhen. Lu Xuepu regarded him as Wuzhen people might because of the article.
According to Hu Record, Mao Kun's collection of books was really rich at that time, and dozens of libraries were still not large enough to accommodate them. Later, his grandson Mao Yuanyi compiled Baihua Building Bibliography according to his actual collection, which was divided into nine studies and ten parts. Nine studies are: Confucianism, Historiography, Literatures, Theories, Thoughts, Military Sciences, Categories, Mathematics and Foreign Studies. Nine studies, and Knowledge handed down from generation to generation were called ten parts. From the categories listed, besides the traditional categories, it also paid special attention to the categories of military, mathematics, foreign studies and Knowledge handed down from generation to generation. From this, we could see that its collection of books is very common and popular, and its contents are quite different from those of ordinary scholar-bureaucrats.Keyword:
