His courtesy name was Qufei and pen name was Jianzhai and he was from Luoyang. He had been the Assistant Administrator. He served as the official of Huzhou and once lived beside the lotus pond of the Shousheng Yard in Qingdun, and he named his house as “Nanxuan”. And he lived freely and lonely.
Chen Yuyi was a famous poet of the Song Dynasty. He was one of the "three masters" of the poetry school of Jiangxi (Huang Tingjian, Chen Shidao, Chen Yuyi). Chen Yuyi focused on the form at the very beginning. But he was lived during the alternation period between the Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty. He suffered from the war and the pain of becoming homeless and wander from place to place. This experience coincided with the spirit of Du Fu's poetry, so his later poems were depressed and sorrowful, full of feelings, and unlike other poets of the Jiangxi poetry school. Famous poet Liu Kezhuang once had a comment: "There are many wonderful poets after Yuan You, but the form was just similar as Su and Huang. And Jianzhai is not, he learned something from Du Fu... It’s simple but thoughtful. His ability should be above others.”
During his stay in Qingdun, Chen Yuyi had very close relationship with local monks and celebrities, and he was delighted by poetry. Many poems described his experience of boating on the lake with Ye Tianjing and the monk Hong Zhi and discuss about the Buddhas, such as Miss Tianjing and Zhi Lao so Visit Them, Sitting with Zhi Lao and Tian Jing at Night and so on.
Chen Yuyi learnt a lot from Du Fu, and learnt more about the syntax and allusion in his poetry. After the Song Dynasty, Chen Yuyi’ Jian Zhai had been a scenic spot in Wuzhen, and it complemented the Zhaoming Academy. There are thirty volumes of Jian Zhai Collection and one volume of Wu Zhu Prose.Keyword:
